TV Mount Projects on a Brick Fireplace

Mounting a television on a brick fireplace can be a great way to get the best of both worlds. Not only does it give you a beautiful focal point for your living room, but it also allows you to enjoy all your favorite shows and movies in comfort and style. With the right hardware and a little creativity, it's easy to mount your TV on your brick fireplace and enjoy the best of both worlds.

Keep in mind that while this is very doable, it requires more preparation, knowledge and tools than you would need if mounting your TV to drywall. However, if your fireplace is the best space in your room and you want to create a focal point around this space, it can definitely be worth while to make this happen.

Let's Dive In.

Let's mount your TV to your brick fireplace!

Things you May Need

  • TV Fireplace Mount (See options listed above!).

  • Drill - We recommend using a Hammer Drill, this will make it a lot easier to drill into the brick. If you don't have one, a regular drill will work fine, just make sure you have the proper drill bit.

  • Hammer or Masonry Drill Bit.

  • Anchors or Concrete Screws.

  • Stud Finder - this will make finding your studs a lot easier, removing the guess work and making sure your TV mount is anchored to your brick wall properly.

  • Level - to ensure your TV is not mounted on an angle!

  • Measuring Tape.

  • Hex Head Concrete Screw Anchors - these are your best bet for anchoring items to masonry materials, such as brick, stone and concrete.

  • PPE (Protective Personal Equipment) - Things like safety glasses so you do not get debris in your eyes, and work gloves to keep your fingers safe from cuts.

  • Clean Up - drilling into brick and mortar will get messy! Make sure you have cleaning supplies handy, such as a vacuum cleaner, duster and wet cloth for when you are done mounting your TV.

What to consider when mounting a TV on your brick fireplace.

When mounting your TV on a brick fireplace, it's important to keep in mind that the heat from the fireplace may cause damage to your TV. Make sure to use a sturdy mount that can withstand the heat, and place your TV far enough away from the fireplace so that it doesn't get too hot. A solid mantle piece should help keep the heat away from your TV, so consider mounting it elsewhere if your fireplace does not have a mantle. You should also avoid mounting your TV too high, as it could fall and be damaged. With a little bit of planning and care, you can safely and securely mount your TV on a brick fireplace.

How to Mount your TV on a Brick Fireplace

Step 1

You'll need to purchase a TV fireplace mount. These mounts can be found at most electronics stores, or online. Checkout our recommendations on our Amazon store.

Step 2

Once you have your TV mount, along with all of the necessary materials, you can begin the mounting process. You'll need to find the studs in your wall and mark them. If you're not sure how to do this, I recommend using a stud finder. This removes any uncertainty from your work and ensures your mount is anchored properly to the wall. Mark your holes based on your TV mount and use a level to make sure your marks are level.

Step 3

You'll then need to drill holes into the brick where you marked them for the mounting bracket.

Step 4

Assemble your TV wall mount kit according to the instructions provided. Once complete, you can mount the brackets to your TV.

Step 5

Finally, you will need to secure the TV with brackets to the wall mount. Be sure to use all the proper safety measures when mounting your TV to avoid injury to yourself, or damage to your TV, mount, or fireplace.

Tips and Tricks

  • If you're having trouble finding the studs in your wall, try using a stud finder.

  • Be careful when drilling into the brick. You don't want to damage your fireplace.

  • Make sure the mounting bracket is secure before attaching your TV. Otherwise, it could fall and break.

FAQs on Mounting your TV on a Brick Fireplace

Q: Is it safe to mount a TV over a brick fireplace?

A: For the most part, yes. Mounting your TV over your brick fireplace has some risk, due to the fact that heat rises, which could put your TV at risk for damage. You can reduce this risk by making sure there is a mantle between your TV and fireplace. If your fireplace doesn't have one, we would recommend adding a mantle, or shelf to the space and that you leave enough room (about 7 inches) between your fireplace and TV to keep your TV safe from potential heat damage.

Q: When installing my TV mount, should I drill into the brick, or the mortar?

A: Mortar will be easier to drill into, because it is a softer substance than brick is. However, if you ensure you have the proper drill bit you shouldn't have a problem. Anchoring into the mortar will mean that the anchor itself is pushing against the intact bricks around it, securing it in place. To sum up though, it doesn't matter which material you choose to drill into, as each one would be a sturdy fastening. That being said, mortar is easier to patch, and will blend better than brick. If you ever want to move your TV to a different location, or are moving all together, patching your brick will be more difficult than patching your mortar.

Q: What size anchors should I use when mounting a TV to brick?

A: We would recommend using masonry screws that are a minimum of 1/4" diameter.
